Peter McElwain
Peter McElwain grew up in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and studied architecture at university in Ottawa, the nation’s capital. Peter spent the last thirty years of his career leading a team in the planning, design, and construction of over 55 new schools and several educational facilities in both Canada and the United States. Peter moved to southeast Texas in 1998 and served as the District Architect/Planner for Katy ISD for almost twenty years. In retirement, Peter’s goal has been to continue to support students through the writing and illustration of books for young readers. In addition to his most recent book “Ollie the Owl and the Hunt for a Hoo” Peter has written and illustrated two previous books “The Candy Cane App” and “The Mystery at Golf Hole Three”. All three books present an imaginative, vividly illustrated story carrying with them a great uplifting message.
In recognition of his contribution to students and to Katy ISD, the School District bestowed upon him the great honor of naming a new school after him; Peter McElwain Elementary School. The school opened in 2020, home to approximately 1,100 students and staff. After the “OWL” mascot was established in 2021, Peter wished to create a story around “Ollie the Owl” that would be relatable and enjoyable to all young children.
Peter is married to Darlene, and they live in Montgomery, Texas. They have a grown daughter whom the “Kris Marie” character in his books is based upon. They look forward to finding much joy in the years to come in supporting young children and their learning.
Peter is President of PHM Creative Studio and in addition to his and Darlene’s desire to volunteer and support students and teachers at his namesake school his hobbies include the arts, sports and the great outdoors.
